The Redbank Copper Mine is located in the McArthur River Basin of the Northern Territory and has a long history of copper extraction and processing. As part of recent redevelopment of the mine, VDM EcOz environmental scientists carried out detailed environmental assessment and reporting in support of the new lease application. Of particular interest was the protection of the habitat of the endangered Gouldian Finch. Every aspect of potential impact on these birds was carried out including assessment of the potential noise impact on the known roosting places along the haul route.
The acoustic team of VDM Consulting carried out noise propagation modelling along the full length of the route, from the mine to the camp site, considering noise emissions from trucks and light-vehicles. Based on the results of the noise propagation modelling and considering research by ornithologist, recommendations were made for protection of the acoustic amenity at the Gouldian Finch habitat.
